Question 1

What does Japanese knotweed look like?

Accepted Answer

It has green bamboo-like stems with red spots and heart-shaped leaves. In summer, you will see clusters of small white flowers. During winter, the stems turn brown and brittle while the roots stay alive.

Question 2

Is this survey a legal requirement?

Accepted Answer

While the standard itself is guidance, councils almost always require it by law for planning. You likely will not get permission to build without one if trees are nearby. Following it keeps you safe from legal trouble.

Question 3

Can I get a mortgage on a house with Japanese knotweed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you usually need a professional management plan. Banks want to see an insurance backed guarantee from a specialist. Without this, most lenders will decline the loan until the weeds are dealt with properly.

Question 4

Do I need permission to cut down a tree?

Accepted Answer

You must check if the tree is protected or in a conservation area. The council can fine you heavily for cutting protected trees without consent. If no rules apply, you can usually proceed freely.

Question 5

How much does stump removal typically cost?

Accepted Answer

As a guide, prices usually start around £80 for small stumps. Large or difficult stumps could cost over £400. The price depends on the size of the wood and how deep you need to grind, so ask your professional for a fixed quote.

Question 6

Do I need planning permission for a log cabin?

Accepted Answer

Most structures under 2.5 metres high are fine without it. However, rules change if you live in special protected areas. Always check with your local council before you buy one.

Question 7

Is it illegal to cut hedges during bird nesting season?

Accepted Answer

It is not strictly illegal, but damaging an active nest is a crime. Most pros suggest waiting or checking very carefully between March and August. This keeps you on the right side of the law while protecting wildlife.

Question 8

Do I need planning permission for new railings?

Accepted Answer

You usually do not need it if they are under one metre high by a road. If they are elsewhere, they can usually be two metres high. Always check with your council if you live in a protected area.
